Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. While a small child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford became interested in acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that the school was not for her. Ford later applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
